Children's vintage books always catch my eye when visiting the antique barn near my home. I appreciate the gentle themes, flowing writing and graceful illustrations that line the pages of these books. They are always filled with so much beauty. I thought it would be fun to share with you today both the innocence and sweetness of childhood we noticed and connected with while reading through our small vintage collection the other night. What a lovely gift idea for this holiday season-- a few vintage children's books joined with some Jacks, a miniature tea set, Dominoes, marbles or wooden blocks nestled together in a handmade cloth bag!
"John's building a wonderful castle - look! Like those he's seen in his picture book, Fairy-tale castles of long ago, where lovely princesses lived, you know."
"The girls are making caps. They are for the dolls. One cap is red, one cap is white, and one cap is blue."
"I don't need a cooking book when I go out doors to cook. Acorns filled with yellow berries make delicious pies for fairies. Spider webs are nice for making frosting when i do my baking.Pine cone cakes are what I frosten and we eat them very often. In the woods are wet brown mosses for ice cream with chocolate sauces. And no matter where I look I can't find any prunes to cook."
"Oh, I like my pretty new dress," said Mary Ann. "But I wish I didn't have to put my apron on. I don't like aprons. I am too big for aprons." Mary Ann went out to play. Mother was in the flower bed. She was taking some plants out of a big box. "Oh, mother, may I help you?" asked Mary Ann."Yes, dear," said mother. "But put on your pink apron, so you will not get a spot on your pretty new dress."...
"There were heaps and heaps of buck wheat cakes, just swimming in lollipop sirup--one for Buster, one for Mother Bear, and one for each of the little bear friends."
"Did you ever blow off the white head of a dandelion? Have you seen the dainty sails go floating off, each with a seed for an anchor? Your puffs of breath started the baby dandelions off on their air trip. It was a trip they needed to take if they were to have a chance in the world..."
May these gentle scenes inspire peace and beauty into your every day!
